Black flies (Simuliidae)

At the present, about 55 species of black flies are known in Finland, some of which are Holarctic. The taxonomic status is unclear for some species, for instance, synonymous or cryptic species. The morphological identification of many species at the larval or pupal stage is uncertain. DNA barcoding will be used to investigate both intra- and interspecific variation within the entire Holarctic region and the identification of larval- and pupal-stage individuals in collaboration with North American researchers. Based on previous results, DNA barcoding works well in most black fly species, but in some species groups the technique does not discriminate reliably closely related species.
